Dinh Cong Silver Jewelry started in the Ly Dynasty

On the banks of the To Lich river, in the village of Dinh Cong, silver craft jewelry making was started during the Ly Dynasty and has been maintained by artisans for over 1,500 years. Dinh Cong silver products are very famous, with many artisans having been invited to make jewelry for the Vietnamese royal family.

Fortune and challenge

Along with success, traditional Dinh Cong silver crafting has also experienced extremely difficult times. For example, in 1945, the Vietnamese government strictly controlled gold and silver. This led to a lack of raw materials forcing many artisan families to give up on this traditional work. Some artisans persisted in pursuing their craft by purchasing old copper wires and then burning them before plating them in gold and silver colour to use as a temporary substitute. 

Elaborate and meticulous silver wire manipulations

Anyone can learn this jewelry making skill if they invest their time, but to become an artisan creating new designs and using this skill to earn a living, you need to have perseverance and love for the silver craft. From the preparation of raw materials to the completion of the product, it is very time consuming, and all done by hand. The artisan spends weeks making elaborate and meticulous silver wire manipulations which require a high level of technique and skill.
